Sealy Technology & Innovation

For over 140 years, Sealy has invested in sleep science to engineer mattresses that do more than feel comfortable — they actively support your body's natural alignment. Every layer, coil, and fiber is the result of decades of orthopedic research and material innovation.

The Foundation of Support

The Posturepedic® Difference

Posturepedic® is not a marketing label — it is a precise engineering specification. Developed in partnership with orthopedic surgeons, it defines exactly how a mattress must be constructed to support the human body during sleep.

Why the Center Third Matters

When you lie down, your body does not distribute weight evenly. Research shows that the hip and lower back region — what sleep scientists call the "center third" — bears the greatest load. For side sleepers, this is the hip and waist. For back sleepers, it is the lumbar spine and sacrum. For stomach sleepers, it is the abdomen and pelvis.

A mattress that treats all zones equally will eventually sag in the middle, throwing your spine out of alignment. Posturepedic® technology specifically reinforces this zone with a targeted support grid and denser internal components to ensure decades of consistent, level support.

The result: less morning stiffness, fewer pressure points, and a mattress that maintains its supportive properties long after competitors begin to degrade.

Targeted Center Support

The center third of the mattress carries up to 60% of your total body weight — concentrated in the hips, pelvis, and lumbar spine. Sealy engineers this zone specifically to prevent the "hammocking" effect where the middle sags over time.

Orthopedic Collaboration

Sealy's Posturepedic technology was developed in collaboration with orthopedic specialists. The goal: keep your spine in a neutral position throughout the night, reducing pressure on intervertebral discs and supporting the natural S-curve of your back.

Reinforced Support Zone

Inside every Posturepedic mattress, the center support zone features denser, stiffer coil gauges and higher-density foam beneath the hip area. This prevents premature body impressions — one of the leading causes of mattress replacement — giving you durable support that lasts.

Full-Body Pressure Relief

While the center provides firm structural support, the outer zones use softer comfort layers to cradle the shoulders and legs. This zoned approach creates a balanced feel — supported where you need it, cushioned where you don't.

Internal Support Structure

The Coil Systems Inside Every Sealy

What you feel on top of a mattress is determined by what is engineered below. Sealy's coil systems are the backbone of every model — designed to isolate motion, adapt to pressure, and maintain consistent support across the entire sleep surface.

Technology 01

Response Pro Encased Coil™

Traditional mattress coil systems are interconnected — when one coil moves, neighboring coils react. This is what causes the "partner disturbance" effect that wakes light sleepers throughout the night. Sealy's Response Pro Encased Coil system solves this at the engineering level.

Each individual coil is wrapped in its own fabric pocket, completely isolating it from adjacent coils. This means movement on one side of the mattress does not transmit to the other. The coils operate completely independently, responding only to the direct pressure applied above them.

Beyond motion isolation, individually encased coils also contour more precisely to your body's shape — providing targeted lift under lighter areas like the ankles and waist, while delivering firmer resistance under heavier zones like the hips.

  • Eliminates cross-coil motion transfer between sleep partners
  • Each coil responds independently to localized pressure
  • Reduces disturbance for couples with different sleep schedules
  • Provides precise contouring across the entire body surface

Technology 02

PostureGrid™ Targeted Pressure Relief

Located between the coil support core and the comfort layers, the PostureGrid is a precision-engineered mesh or foam layer designed to deliver pressure relief exactly where the body demands it — and firmer resistance where structural support is needed.

Think of it as a pressure map built into the mattress. The zones directly beneath the shoulders use a softer grid density to allow the shoulder to sink slightly, keeping the spine level for side sleepers. The center zone uses a firmer density to resist the downward load of the hips and lower back.

This zoned approach means the mattress works with your body's natural weight distribution rather than against it — eliminating the trade-off between "too firm for shoulders" and "too soft for back support."

  • Zoned foam or mesh grid with varying densities across the surface
  • Softer shoulder zones allow proper lateral spine alignment
  • Firmer hip zone prevents pelvic tilt and lumbar collapse
  • Transitions smoothly between zones for a seamless feel
Comfort & Protection

Cooling, Comfort & Edge Technologies

Structural support is only half the equation. Sealy's comfort and protection technologies work at the surface level — controlling temperature, adapting to pressure, and maximizing every inch of the sleep surface.

Cool-to-the-Touch Sleep Surface

SealyChill™

The SealyChill™ cover is made with specially engineered phase-change fibers that actively absorb body heat rather than reflecting it. When you first lie down, the surface draws warmth away from the skin, creating the sensation of sleeping on a cool, fresh surface.

Unlike simple breathable covers that merely allow airflow, SealyChill™ fibers interact with thermal energy at the molecular level. The phase-change material (PCM) embedded in the fabric absorbs heat as it transitions from solid to liquid state — a process that is invisible and continuous throughout the night.

Adaptive Body-Contouring Comfort

ComfortSense™ Premium Memory Foam

Standard memory foam has one limitation: it responds to temperature, not just pressure. ComfortSense™ Premium Memory Foam is engineered to be body-responsive at room temperature — so it conforms immediately to your shape without requiring body heat to soften it first.

The foam uses an open-cell structure that allows air to move through the material as you shift positions. This prevents the heat-trapping effect that makes traditional memory foam uncomfortable for warm sleepers. The result is all the contouring benefit of memory foam — without the heat retention drawback.

Conforms to your body's unique shape and weight distribution

Open-cell structure promotes airflow and prevents heat buildup

Reduces pressure on joints, hips, and shoulders

Recovers quickly when you change positions

Full-Surface Support, Edge to Edge

DuraFlex™ Edge System

One of the most overlooked aspects of mattress quality is edge support. Without a reinforced perimeter, the usable sleeping surface shrinks significantly — the edges compress and roll, pushing you toward the center and reducing the effective size of your mattress by several inches on each side.

DuraFlex™ addresses this with a high-density, flexible coil border that runs around the entire perimeter of the mattress. These edge coils are specifically wound to resist lateral compression — meaning they push back when you sit or roll toward the edge rather than collapsing under load.

Consistent support across the full width and length of the mattress

Prevents the "roll-off" sensation near the edges

Allows use of the entire sleep surface without falling off

Maintains a firm, level sitting edge for getting in and out of bed

CertiPUR-US® Certified Foams

Every foam layer used in Sealy mattresses is CertiPUR-US® certified — independently tested and verified to be free of harmful chemicals including formaldehyde, heavy metals, ozone depleters, and PBDEs. This certification ensures that the materials you sleep on every night meet strict standards for content, emissions, and durability. It is not a marketing claim — it is a third-party certification backed by accredited laboratory testing.
